Dive Into History and Art: The Okinawa Wreck
The Okinawa, a 107-foot Army Tugboat originally named the LT 1970, offers divers a fascinating blend of history, artistry, and underwater adventure. Built in 1953, this tugboat served for decades towing destroyers along the East Coast before being decommissioned and repurposed as an artificial reef. Sunk in Shipwreck Park Pompano Beach by Shipwreck Park Inc., the Okinawa became the 18th wreck in the park, offering an intriguing dive site in 69 feet of water. Resting upright with its bow pointing south, the wreck rises to 35 feet at the top of the pilot house, making it easily accessible for exploration.
What truly sets the Okinawa apart is the Midnight Sun, a whimsical underwater dive bar created by renowned artist Dennis McDonald. Sponsored by Finlandia Vodka, the dive bar features captivating sea creature sculptures and a magical mermaid holding a “Gazing Globe.” This reflective globe encourages divers to contemplate their role as stewards of the ocean. The Okinawa was carefully prepared for penetration dives, with multiple access points in the superstructure. Adventurous divers can swim through the opening in front of the wheelhouse, navigate the engine room, and exit through the enchanting dive bar. With its rich history and artistic flair, the Okinawa promises an unforgettable underwater experience.
