Dive Into History: Exploring the SS Copenhagen

The SS Copenhagen offers divers and snorkelers a fascinating glimpse into maritime history. This 325-foot steamer, with a 47-foot beam, met its fate over a century ago, running aground along the eastern side of the Pompano Drop Off. Although parts of the wreck are buried, many features remain visible, inviting exploration of its storied past. It’s a nostalgic experience to dive or snorkel a site that has weathered the tides of time, now teeming with marine life. Schools of baitfish dart among the wreckage, often pursued by larger predators, adding dynamic energy to this historical site.

Built in 1898 in Sunderland, England, the SS Copenhagen was a steel-hulled, schooner-rigged screw steamship registered to the Glasgow Shipowners Company, Ltd. Originally designed to transport cargo across the Atlantic, the ship was carrying nearly 5,000 tons of coal on a voyage from Pennsylvania to Cuba when it ran aground in 1900. Despite the crew’s efforts to unload cargo and free the vessel, it became permanently stranded and was abandoned. Today, the wreck serves as both an underwater museum and a vibrant marine habitat, offering divers a unique blend of history and aquatic adventure.
