Explore History Beneath the Waves: The Ancient Mariner
The Ancient Mariner is a 165-foot ex-Coast Guard Cutter steeped in history and now a thriving artificial reef. Originally commissioned as the USCG Cutter Nemesis, she served as a sub-chaser during World War II before being decommissioned in 1964. Later transformed into a floating restaurant, the vessel found new life in 1991 when it was sunk as part of the Broward Reef Program, creating a remarkable dive site in 70 feet of water.
Resting upright with a slight list to port, the Ancient Mariner is blanketed with vibrant sea life. Its proximity to the reef allows fish to move seamlessly between the ship and nearby habitats, creating an active underwater ecosystem. Divers often encounter a large Goliath Grouper guarding the wheelhouse, while the aft deck, now collapsed, adds a sense of intrigue. For those looking to penetrate the wreck, the forward sections offer the best access.
